The allure of a Rose

Nobody can deny the charm of a vibrant red rose. Throughout every civilization that has ever existed, roses has always been a symbol of love and passion. Be it names, places, literature, or color, anything associated with the word “Rose” simply exudes passion and romanticism.

The words a rose would whisper

So what exactly makes a Red Rose so romantic? In the language flowers, Roses represent love and its many forms. A single red Rose represents love at first sight, 3 Roses represents a definite “I love you”, and 99 Roses declares eternal love. The color red itself is the color deep passion and love. Rose oils are heavily used in perfumes, as the smell is often associate with attractiveness. Rose hips, which are the fruits of the rose plant, has minor medicinal uses such as antidepressant and aphrodisiac. They have a deep and rich background of usage that dates back to 5,000 years ago, in China.

The number of Roses also carries a hidden message within them. Here are some of the more commonly known or accessible definitions:

  • 1 Rose – Love at first sight

  • 12 Roses – You might as well shout at your partner to “be mine”!

These are simply some of the more common representations. There are less common amounts, representing different things.

How to take care of the Roses

Just like how your love and care for your partner would nurture them, these delicate flowers naturally would require some care as well. Whether you’re a recipient or simply a flower enthusiast, these are some of the simple tips and tricks we recommend, in order to keep the flowers fresh for as long as we can.

Keep it cool
First and foremost, Roses are sensitive to the temperature, and it will be optimal to keep them under room temperature. Cut flowers do not require sunlight, and it is not advisable to expose them to direct sunlight. A humid location would be beneficial for them as well, so as to discourage evaporation.

Soak the stems
Just like any relationships, a daily maintenance will keep them fresh. You’ll have to snip the stem with a sharp knife, scissors, hand pruner, or shear. A blunt tool will crush the stem, preventing proper water absorption. It is best to cut them while submerged in the water, preventing any air from entering the stem and oxidizing the flower.
The advised length to cut off 1.5 cm to 2.5 cm, and to cut it every few days, after the stem has turned mushy or damaged. Change the water daily, as dirt or residue can destroy your hopes of making the flowers last.

All in all, roses are the perfect gift, they carry with them a rich history and a deep, sophisticated message that can be written by anyone. They are akin to the cherry on top of any well-planned date night, if the cherry was a magical fruit that will grant you the blessing of the gods. Surprise your friend, parents, or spouse at your next meet-up with some crisp, vibrant Red Roses, and see their faces light up upon laying their eyes on those soft, supple red petals.
