History of Prince Flower Shop – The Best Online Florist in Singapore

Mr. Tan - Founder Prince’s Flower Shop Singapore

Every teenager dreams of owning a business someday. Our founder, Mr. Tan Peng Kheok, turned his dream into reality when we began Prince’s Flower Shop back in 1956. Mr. Tan Peng Kheok worked as a salesman in a Provision shop back in 1956. His monthly salary was around 60 dollars at the time. During his time as a salesman, he observed an old man selling flowers. This man’s way of selling was unusual. Instead of having a flower store, he used to walk up to houses, knocking from door to door, and selling hiss flowers. Even though it required manual labor, the business seemed to be doing quite well for the old man. This made Mr. Tan have a fantastic idea!

Back in the 1960s, flower businesses around Singapore did not have a substantial audience. About 8-10 flower shops were operating in the area during that time. People used to find it troublesome to travel a long way only to buy flowers, and would often end up settling towards buying another present for their friends and family. However, they used to purchase flowers from the old man when he went door to door selling it. It saved them the long trip to the few flower shops the town had, and they were getting fresh flowers. Furthermore, the flowers being sold by the old man in the city were harvested from the hills, making the initial startup cost of the venture basically zero dollars. If he manages to sell all the flowers, it would all be his profit amount. This idea stuck in Mr. Tan’s head, and he wanted to pursue it. So he decided to become a florist in Singapore.

The initial cost required to start this new flower business was 70 dollars. Mr. Tan needed to buy a new bicycle to go door to door selling flowers. His salary was 60 dollars only, and therefore, he was 10 dollars short. He went to dozens of friends to lend him 10 dollars as a loan, but they turned him away. At last, one neighbor decided to lend him 10 dollars. This led to Mr. Tan starting his new business venture and becoming a flower salesman. He saw the idea as an excellent opportunity to step into a unique front himself, all without investing a lot of money into the idea.

On Mr. Tan’s first day as a flower salesman, he woke up very early in the morning and traveled up to the hill to collect flowers for selling. After collecting all the flowers, he traveled to the Bukit Timah area and started selling his flowers to foreigners. He profited 8 dollars on his first day. This made Mr. Tan very delighted about all his hard work. He was troubled for 10 dollars a few days ago, and his venture earned him 8 dollars on the first day. His first few weeks earned him hundreds of dollars, making his vision in his venture even stronger. Slowly, Mr. Tan started to upgrade his business and invested in a motorbike. He continued to deliver flowers in several areas of Singapore. He expanded his deliveries in several areas. Within a few years, there was a delivery car for his flowers. His venture was very successful, and he had to cover every street in Singapore to deliver his fresh and bright flowers to the residents. Other businesses were catching up on his techniques, but the magnitude of their services was not as high as Mr. Tan’s. He was the most diligent of them all and made a reputation for himself among the people.

Within a few years, his business began to flourish in Singapore. He was the leading florist in town and invested in different types of flowers. He chose to grow his own supply of plants and flowers for his customers. He built up a nursery and started cultivating several types of flowers for his business. Mr. Tan was the first florist in Singapore to invest in his own inventory instead of buying from different vendors. Prince’s flower shop had very steady growth for almost seven years, and Singapore kept receiving flowers on their doorsteps. The citizens adored him for his services as he saved them the time and effort to go out and get flowers from shops located far from their homes.

In 1966, a decade after Mr. Tan initially started his new flower business, the Government passed down a new bill that required all companies to be registered to continue operations. Mr. Tan quickly registered his business and rented a new space at the Beauty World Centre. This was the first storefront to ever exist for Prince’s flower shop. During the ’60s, florists used names like “Queen’s,” “King’s,” etc., which made Mr. Tan eager to name his flower shop as “Prince’s,” thus earning it the name it has, till this very day.

During the 1990s, Mr. Tan’s nursery business started to grow to immense heights, and he leased a new land of about 50,000 m2 by the Singaporean Government. Very soon, the nursery business expanded into landscaping. This led to the creation of the “Prince’s Landscaping and Construction” company. Singapore’s famous Prince Flower Shop remained at the forefront in all of his business ventures. His other company received many big projects like Sentosa, Changi Airport, etc. On Singapore’s National Day, Mr. Tai Peng became South East Asia’s King of Flowers, earning him the respect of many florists and flower enthusiasts around the world.

Currently, Mr. Tan is enjoying his retirement from his business and has handed over the management to his two sons and one grandson. Even though Mr. Tan is living in his Golden Years, he often visits Prince’s holdings and offices regularly to check up on the business he once started with a bicycle and a loan of 10 dollars. In addition, he often lends his expert advice and insights to his sons about the floral business. Singapore has grown into a Garden City, and that overjoys Mr. Tan. He is pleased to have been a part of this memorable green movement that helped Singapore evolve into today’s green state. We wish well to all his customers and hope that his services and flowers were able to put a bright smile on your and your loved one’s faces!
